Kolkata: Vedic Village director arrested

Kolkata, Aug 30: Vedic Village owner and MD Raj Kishore Modi was arrested on Saturday night, Aug 29, for forcible acquisition of land and keeping illegal arms.

"Raj Kishore Modi was formally arrested on late Saturday, Aug 29, night after several rounds of quizzing since Aug 24," said North 24 Parganas district Superintendent Police Rahul Srivastava.

Sources said the miscreants, including local tough Gabbar, had hurled bombs and fired indiscriminately after their team lost a game in a soccer tournament. A youth was killed in the violence.

Lashing out at CPM, Mamata Banerjee said she wanted an 'independent probe' into the arson. "CPM is to be blamed for the violence. Now it is blaming others. I want an independent investigation and punishment for whoever may be involved."

"My party MLA from Bhangar, Arabul Islam, has no link with the case and is being framed. I have told him to stay out of any mess. These incidents at Rajarhat have been going on for 10 years. Arabul became an MLA only in 2006, she added.

A large quantity of illegal arms and ammunition were found from the resort after the violence which began with a football match-related clash and led to the killing of a person on Aug 23.
