London, July 23 (ANI): Scientists at the University of East Anglia are looking for 40 post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes willing to eat two pieces of Belgian chocolate a day for 365 days- all in the name of research.

The boffins are actually studying the possible health benefits of the tasty treat and need the female participants to test their specially made bars.

Doctors want to see if the flavonoid compounds in chocolate can reduce the risk of heart disease, reports The Sun.

In order to create the special "bitter" bars rich in flavonoids, a Belgian chocolatier has been called in.

The pre-requisites for volunteers are - they must be post-menopausal, under 76, non-smokers, HRT and cholesterol lowering drugs free and have Type 2 diabetes.

Volunteers will also have to give blood and urine samples, have an ultrasound of their arteries and fill in a questionnaire about their lifestyle.

Dr Peter Curtis, of the university's school of medicine, said: "A successful outcome could be the first step in developing new ways to improve the lives of people at increased risk of heart disease." (ANI)
