Prez appoints Manikrao Gavit as LS Protem Speaker
New Delhi, May 30: Manikrao Gavit, senior most Lok Sabha has been appointed Protem Speaker by Indian President Pratibha Patil.
Gavit who belongs to Congress party will perform the duties of the Speaker till the election of a new Speaker on Jun 3. Nine-term member Gavit, having a cumulative experience of 27 years and eight months in Lok Sabha, was elected from the tribal constituency of Nandurbar in Maharashtra and had served as Minister of State for Home in the UPA government.
A panel of four senior members comprising of Basudeb Acharia (CPI-M), Arjun Charan Sethi (BJD), Biren Singh Engti (Congress) and Sumitra Mahajan (BJP) was also appointed by the President to administer oath to the new members. The first person to take oath will be Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee, who will be followed by the Leader of Opposition LK Advani.
