Gujarat riot cases trials will come to end in less than a year: SIT chief
New Delhi, May 1 (ANI): Expressing happiness over the Supreme Court's decision on Gujarat riots cases, the apex court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief, R K Raghavan, on Friday said the trial of the cases would come to an end in less than a year. "I cannot give a fixed deadline. I can only say that no time will be lost. I am hoping that these trials will come to a conclusion in about less than a year," Raghavan said.
Raghavan's reaction came after the apex court lifted the stay on the trials of the 2002 Gujarat riots cases.
"I am certainly happy with the judgement. I think it is going to facilitate the work of the SIT in Gujarat. I look forward to further work in that direction," a former CBI director added.
Earlier in the day, the apex court ordered a retrial of the Gujarat riots cases by fast track courts.
The apex court also directed that the trial would not be shifted out of Gujarat.
Besides, it also ordered he filing of additional chargesheets against new accused named by the Special Investigating Team (SIT).
On April 27, the apex court asked the SIT to probe the role of 64 people, including that of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the cases. (ANI)
