Women vandalise illicit liquor shops in Pune
Pune, Mar 17 (ANI): Armed with sticks, women took to the streets in Pune and destroyed illicit liquor shops.
Scores of women attacked two shops and set fire to barrels of illicit liquor.
Dhankawadi area, where the incident took place, has been reportedly supplying hooch to Pune for years.
The women took law into their hands after their appeals to the authorities failed to elicit any favourable action, social activists said.
"We had given a written complaint to police that illegal business was going on here. It's not that that they are unaware. They visit here but no strong action is being taken," said Varsha Tapkir, a social activist.
At least 800 litres of hooch was destroyed by the women demonstrators. Mushrooming of illegal liquor units across the country add to the woes of poor women.
Most instances of violence against women take place in the lower strata of society where the consumption of cheap liquor is rampant. (ANI)
