'Low-error' golf balls developed

London, Dec 16 (ANI): Researchers from Seoul National University in Korea have developed a new golf ball with grooves rather than dimples that would prevent the putted ball from going in the wrong direction.

Dimples on golf balls help a struck ball to fly further however replacing what looks like a pretty pattern, with grooves would prevent the putted ball from going in the wrong direction.

According to Hae Cheon Choi from Seoul National University in Korea, the trouble with dimples is that striking one of the indentations off centre can send the struck ball in the wrong direction.

The researchers have now developed a new golf ball with grooves rather than dimples on its surface, arranged in such a way as to divide the ball's surface into triangles, reports New Scientist.

The grooves disrupt airflow in a similar way to dimples, so the ball still carries roughly the same distance.

As grooves cover a smaller surface area than dimples, the ball is less likely to fly off at an odd angle. The end result is fewer putting errors. (ANI)
