PU win NZ Varsities basketball
Chandigarh, Nov 28 (UNI) Hosts Panjab University richly deserved title as they outplayed Kurukshetra University by 66-50 in the last match in the four-team round robin league of the North Zone Inter-University Basketball Championship at the floodlit PU Campus courts here tonight.
Panjab University maintained their all-win record as it was their third successive victory.
Delhi University finished runners-up with two victories and one defeat. In their last league fixture, Delhi University beat Punjabi University of Patiala by 83-63.
Punjabi University, with one victory and two loses, were third while winless Kurukshtra finished at the bottom. All these four universities have qualified for the All-India Inter-Zonal Inter-University to be organised by Panjab University here from December 12 to 15.
Kurukhsetra raised hope of a keen tussle against Panjab University as they won the first quarter by one point (19-18).
However, Panjab University, with Rajan Sharma playing a brilliant game, outclassed their rivals in the second quarter which they won with a handsome margin of 31-11.
Panjab University maintained their pressure and clinched the third quarter by 14-10. At this stage the hosts had established a commanding lead of 63-40. Thereafter Panjab University could afford luxury of using the bench strength. Though they lost the fourth quarter by 3-10, still Panjab University emerged victorious.
Tallest player of the tournament Yatin (11) took advantage of his height by sinking baskets from under the ring for Panjab University.. However, the best player was cool and competent Rajan (16) whose scoring was eye-pleasing. Gurbaj Singh topscored with 17 and Abhit contributed 14 points for the winners.
For Kurukshetrra University, Jatin contributed maximum points 19 while Mohit and Parveen made 7 and 8 respectively.
Earlier, Delhi University beat Punjabi University for the second place. Parveen (22), Gurvinder (20) and Vupin (14) formed a good combination to fashion win for Delhi. For Punjabi University, Rupiner (18), Gurlal (15) and Ramanpreet (12) were the main scorers.
