Centre should curb high prices of petrol and diesel: MDMK

Chennai, Nov 24 (UNI) Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko today demanded that the Manmohan Singh Government at the centre bring down the prices of petrol and diesel following sharp decline in the prices of crude oil in the international market.

In a statement here, Mr Vaiko said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance(UPA) Government had hiked the prices of petrol and diesel more than 100 per cent after it came to power in May 2004.

Stating that the Government had hiked the prices for six times, he said whenever the Government hiked the prices, it cited the increase in prices of crude in the international market.

But when the crude prices came down from 160 US Dollars to the present 47 Dollars, the Centre was reluctant to reduce the prices, Mr Vaiko said and demanded that the Government bring down the prices to the level it had prevailed when it came to power in May 2004.

Mr Vaiko said as the Centre was allowing the public sector oil companies to earn profit to the tune of several crores of rupees, the Centre should immediately roll back the prices.
