Opposition to corner AP govt on Babli issue

Hyderabad, Nov 22 (UNI) An all-party meeting, convened by the main Opposition Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, today decided to put pressure on the Congress government to take immediate steps to halt Babli and 11 other projects across river Godavari being taken up by the upper riparian state of Maharashtra.

A delegation of TDP leaders, which visited the project sites in Maharashtra recently today held a meeting and sought the support of all parties, including the CPI, CPI(M), BJP and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti to raise the issue forcefully in the Winter Session of the state Assembly next month and to ensure that these projects were immediately halted.

The parties would meet again on November 24 and also call on Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to impress upon him the need for protecting the state's interests.

If the upper riparian state was allowed to complete the projects to store over 50 TMC of water, the lands irrigated by the Sriramsagar project would turn barren, senior TDP leader E Dayakar Rao, MP, said.
