SC stays Calcutta HC order in Rizwanur death case
New Delhi, Nov 21 (UNI) The Supreme Court today stayed till December 5 the order of the Calcutta High Court directing three police officials including former DCP, ACP, and an SI, to surrender before Area Magistrate for their alleged involvement in the Rizwanur Rahman death case.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam issued the interim order for hearimg of the petitions filed by Ajay Kumar, former DCP (Detective Department), ACP Shakunti Chakraborty and SI Krishnendu Das, who have come in appeal against the High Court order directing them to surrender.
The petitioners are facing allegations of harassing and torturing the deceased who had married Priyanka Todi, daughter of Kolkata-based businessman Ashok Todi, who was opposed to the marriage of his daughter to Rizwanur Rahman.
Todi himself is an accused in the case.
The petitioners have contended that they were not involved in the harassment of the deceased who had committed suicide because he was under depression.
