BMC to absorb jobless labourers due to global recession
Mumbai, Nov 21 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will absorb labourers, who lost their job due to closure of private projects in the city following global recession, in its new projects.
Addressing mediapersons here today, BMC commissioner Dr Jairaj Phatak ruled out reports of increase in taxation due to financial crises, and said the economic slowdown had not affected the BMC projects, on the contrary the BMC will soon start the approved projects to absorb jobless labourers.
He said Corporation's income had increased compared to previous year hence there was no question of increasing taxes.
Clarifying his stand, he said collection of Octroi duty has increased by 21.8 per cent from April this year to November 18 as compared to 19 per cent for the same period last fiscal.
Collection of property tax has also increased by 25.43 per cent and the development tax also increased significantly, he added.
