Mysore: Abhisheka to Maha Nandi atop Chamundi Hill

Mysuru, Nov 17: A large number of devotees witnessed abhisheka to Maha Nandi atop the Chamundi Hill on Monday, Nov 17. The three-hour event beginning at 10:45 am held for the third consecutive year under the auspices of Sri Kshetra Chamundi Hill Nandipuja Mahotsava Samithi was led by Sri Chidananda Swamiji of Hosa Mutt, Neelakanta Siddamalla Swamiji and Vyaghramukha Guhe Jamunagiri Swamiji (President of the Samithi). It is held every year on the third Monday of Karthika Maasa in Makara Lagna.

Milk (1,000 liters), curd (500 liters), Nandini Ghee (25 kg) and ten buckets each of honey, sugar panchamrutha, Bel fruit, cut sugarcane, banana, apple, grapes, cucumber, perfumes, camphor, paramanna, turmeric, dates, tender coconut, jasmine, rose, marigold (chendu hoovu), thulasi, vanaraja flowers, sandalwood, kumkum and flowers were poured over the Nandi, resembling the abhisheka of Shravanabelagola and Dharmasthala.

A 10-member team of gamakis from Sanskrit Patashala led by Prof. M Vishwanath chanted verses from the religious scriptures.

Traditional instruments were played to herald the ritual, being performed for world peace, prosperity and well-being of all in the universe, Prof. Vishwanath told reporters. The organisers had arranged distribution of prasadam, bisibele bhath, curd rice, vegetable palav for more than 6,000 devotees, he said.

S P Manjunath, Secretary, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, was present. Samithi members S. Prakash, Rajanna, Jagannath, Govindu, Shivakumar, Shankar, Sridhar and others took part in the abhisheka.

K R Police Inspector Satyanarayana supervised the security arrangements. K R Traffic Inspector Shivashankar supervised vehicular traffic.
