Shillong, Nov 15 (UNI) The Meghalaya BJP unit today demanded the immediate resignation of Congress Legislator Sayeedullah Nongrum over the issue of Bangladeshi infiltrators.

''Nongrum has to resign as member of the state Legislative Assembly as there are many fake voters, who are actually Bangladeshi nationals in Rajabala constituency,'' BJP president H S Syiemlieh said.

Mr Nongrum, a former Health and Family Welfare Minister, had offered to quit the Assembly if the state government could prove the presence of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in the plain belt area of Garo Hills of the state.

''I can assure you that in my area - plain belt of Garo Hills - no Bangladeshi is present and if so prove it to me and if you can prove it I will resign from my post of MLA. This is my challenge to everyone,'' the senior Congress Legislator told the 60-member House.

''Now that Mr Nongrum has challenged on this issue,'' the BJP president said, ''he must quit the Assembly for the large presence of Bangladeshi infiltrators in his constituency, who have enrolled themselves into the electoral roll of the state.'' Referring to Mr Nongrum's statement, Mr Syiemlieh said Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, too, once claimed that there was not even a single Bangladeshi infiltrator in Assam.
