Cong hits out at Mayawati for her 'behind the curtain plans'

Lucknow, Nov 12 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Congress today accused Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and Chief Minister Mayawati for covertly planning to sell the land of Adarsh jail in Lucknow by shifting it to another place.

Despite giving the Adarsh jail -- known for its historical importance -- status of a national monument, Ms Mayawati was in complete mood to shift it on Mohanlalganj-Gosai road and solve her purpose, the UP Congress Committee release said here.

The CM should not forget that heroes of Kakori incident -- Ashfaq Ulla Khan, Ram Parasad Bismal and others --- had spent a long span of their life term in this jail, which was an exemplary of Hindu-Muslim unity, it contained.

Besides, 38 other freedom fighters were incarcerated in this prison.

Ms Mayawati has passed directions that the jail should become operative at the new site by January 2009, but the party was against the issue and will carry out a signature protest on November 14 on the occasion of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Jayanti here and seek the interception of state Governor T V Rajeswar into the matter, it added.
