DEC tablets to be distributed coinciding 'Filaria Day'

Visakhapatnam, Nov 11 (UNI) The District Medical and Health Officer U Swarajyalakshmi today said Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) tablets would be distributed, coinciding 'Filaria Day' in Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam Districts, covering about 59 lakh population to eliminate lumphatic filariasis.

Talking to newspersons here, Ms Swarajyalakshmi said Filaria was caused by a microparasitic worm, poses problem in lymphatic vessels and move in blood vessels during night. The mosquitos must be eliminated by avoiding stagnation of impure water in drains, unused wells and cesspools, among others, she added.

The Mass Drug Administration (MDA) would prevent fever and body pain from mosquito bites and eliminate filaria, the official said.
