Nandigram, Nov 10 (UNI) Paying homage to the people, who died in a series of violence in Nandigram, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today urged the locals to support the candidate, who could fight against the CPI(M) in the coming byelection here.
She was addressing a rally of her party on the 'black day' to pay homage to the 14 people, killed in police firing last year.
''My humble offer on this day is to request to fix a name and that too from the family of the victims who fought against the onslaught of the CPI(M), to contest the byelection on behalf of Trinamool Congress,'' she said.
The CPI(M) had created a fuss with the Tatas in Singur and Salems in Nandigram as none of them stayed, she added.
She also announced that her party would not allow setting up of a chemical hub in Nayachar near Haldia. She declared that her party would begin a gherao programme on November 18 in protest against it.
She further announced fund from her MP quota for buying seven ambulances for Nandigram as a mark of respect to those killed.
She reiterated that there was no ''Maoist party'' in the state.
It was the CPI(M) sponsoring extremists in the state, she stated.
Meanwhile, report from Lalgarh in West Midnapur district from where maximum number of people were arrested in connection with the landmine explosion in Salboni on November two continued to be very tense following the road blockade by about 5000 tribals.
In all seven tribal leaders were arrested in connection with the road blockade.
Earlier, enraged tribal with their traditional weapons like arrow and baton attacked the police this morning. Later police resorted to lathi-charge to quell the attack, SDO Jhargram Tanmoy Chakraborty said.
Large police contingent have been deployed in the area led by SP, West Midnapur, Rajesh Singh.
The tribals led by Jharkhand Party, Jharkhand Jana Morcha and a tribal outfit Majhia Maroa have been gheraoing the Lalgarh Police Station for the last 7 days.
District Magistrate N S Nigam and SP Rajesh Singh tried to settle the issue by holding a meeting of all Political Parties at Lalgarh police station but failed when Joydeb Giri, a CPM Zonal committee member said that opposition parties in the Maoists zone aided the rebels.
