Punjab: Sexually harassed girl succumbs to injuries

Moga, Nov 7: A woman, who was driven to immolate herself due to harrassment by a godman, succumbed to her 80 per cent burn injuries on Thursday, Nov 6 night at a hospital in Faridkot. The Baghapurana police would conduct the post mortem today on the body of Rupinderjit Kaur, 27-year-old daughter of Darshan Singh of Bhaloor village, who had doused kerosene oil and set herself ablaze at her native village house on November 2, police sources said.

Meanwhile, Baba Zora Singh, mahant of a dera in Nanksar village, was produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate, yesterday on expiry of his police remand and the court sent him into 14-day judicial remand in the case registered against the Mahant for sexually exploiting and driving his woman follower to commit suicide.

The police has registered a case against the 'Baba' on the basis of a letter left by the victim in her house and also the statement recorded by her mother Gurcharan Kaur.

The victim, in her suicide note had alleged that, she along with her family, were followers of the Mahant, who used to visit their family. He gradually began exploiting her and was pressurising her to become a Sadhvi and stay at his dera.

The dera mahant, who was absconding after the woman attempted suicide, was nabbed by police on November 4.
