Karnataka to honour Bhimsen Joshi

{image-Bhimsen Joshi_06112008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Bangalore, Nov 6: Both the Houses of the Karantaka Legislature will honor renowned Hindustani Classical Vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi, who has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, for his immense contribution to Indian Classical music.

Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, Nov 6 Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman, Veeranna Mathikatti said people of the state felt happy over conferring of the honour to Pandit Joshi, who hailed from Rona, a small town in Gadag district in Northern Karantaka. He said Karantaka government was also planning to felicitate Pandit Joshi. To a question Mr Mathikatti said Karnataka legislature would also join the government in honouring Pandit Joshi on the pedestal of Vidhana Soudha.

Mr Mathikatti complemented the the Centre for conferring classical status to Kannada language, one of the ancient languages in the South India. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, who was born and brought up in Karnataka, currently resides in Pune in Maharashtra.
