Obama takes early lead in US electoral college

Washington, Nov 05: Barack Obama took an early lead in the Electoral College on Tuesday with 78 votes to 34 for Republican John McCain, according to media reports. Obama had won his home state of Illinois, plus New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Delaware, Vermont and the District of Columbia. McCain had won Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Oklahoma. Several key battleground states -- Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana -- remained up in the air. NBC declared Pennsylvania for Obama.
