Barack Obama wins New York

Washington, Nov 05: Obama defeated Republican rival John McCain in presidential voting on Tuesday in the heavily Democratic state of New York, winning one of the largest U.S. states with a big cache of electoral votes, U.S. media projected.

The Obama victory, in the home state of his chief rival for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton, was widely expected. Pre-election polls gave him a 20-plus percentage point lead over McCain in the state, which has not backed a Republican since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

The win gives Obama New York's 31 electoral votes, the third-largest state tally after California and Texas. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the presidency in the indirect U.S. system of voting for a leader
