Coimbatore: BJP insists CM to retain Udumalpet taluk

Coimbatore, Nov 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked the Chief Minister to retain Udumalpet taluk in Coimbatore district following people's opposition towards the move to attach the Udumalpet taluk with the new Tirupur district. In a memorandum, the State secretary of the party, G K S Selvakumar, welcomed the decision of the State Government to create Tirupur as a new district carving out some of the areas from Coimbatore and Erode districts.

At a meeting conducted by the Revenue Secretary in Coimbatore, people of Udumalpet opposed the move to attach the Udumalpet taluk with the new Tirupur district. Contrary to the people's wishes the State Government seemed to have decided to attach Udumalpet with the Tirupur district, the memorandum said.

Udumalpet taluk is pre-dominantly an agrarian belt and so was the case of Pollachi and both the taluks are inter-dependent on each other. People of Pollachi and Udumalpet could reach Coimbatore - the present district headquarters - easily because of better train and road connectivity.

Udumalpet getting attached to Tirupur district would only increase the travelling time and ordeal for the people. Even for visiting the Revenue Divisional Officer, they would be forced to travel all their way to Dharapuram. Such a manner of deciding on jurisdiction would be against the wishes of the people. The BJP would support any agitation bythe people of Udumalpet with this demand, he said.
