Former CJI Lalit Mohan Sharma dead at 80

Patna, Nov 3(UNI) Former Chief Justice of India Lalit Mohan Sharma died here today at his residence following a long illness. He was 80.

Survived by a son and a daughter, Justice Sharma had started his legal profession in 1950 as an advocate of Patna High Court. In 1973, he was appointed a Judge of Patna High Court and later became a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1987. On November 18, 1992, he was appointed Chief Justice of India and retired on February 11, 1993.

A resident of Musi village in Jehanabad district of Bihar, Justice Sharma belonged to a family of the legal fraternity as his father Lal Narain Sinha was Attorney General of India.

Soon after receiving news of the death of Justice Sharma, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited his residence and offered floral tributes.

In his message, Mr Kumar described the departed former CJI as a great legal luminary who left an indelible mark on the prestigious judicial profession. He prayed to the Almighty for the peace of the departed soul.
