CPI condemnes increase in bread and milk prices in Goa

Panaji, Nov 2 (UNI) CPI has condemned the Goa government for its ''apathetic and careless attitude'' to the inordinate increase in the bread and milk prices.

CPI secretary Christopher Fonseca, speaking to mediapersons here yesterday, said the party had written a letter to Chief Minister Digamber Kamat protesting the increase in bread and milk prices in the state and urged the government to take measures to stop the inordinate and unbearable price-increase to save the people from the yoke of price-rise of all essential commodities.

He said even before the bread manufacturers and milk suppliers notified their intention to increase the bread price from Rs two to Rs three for a bread weighing 60 gm, many shops and eateries had already hiked the prices.

Mr Fonseca said the government should ensure that the common people in the state, specially the toilers and the working class, be protected from the increase in the bread, milk and food prices.

He observed that the bread manufactures, producers were supplying bread which was below the stipulated weight and prices.

Mr Fonseca suggested some measures such as supply of fuel and raw material to the bread produncers through PDS and supply of wood at reasonable prices to the notified bakers. All bread producers should be covered under the Food and Drug Administration and there should be constant checks on the weight and quality of bread sold.

The government should also take pro-active measures to ensure that the milk and bread sold through various outlets and shops in Goa were priced at notified rates. During the last six months, the price of milk had been hiked thrice, he added.
