One more line provided at Railway Marshalling Yard
Mangalore, Nov 1(UNI) In an attempt to provide added infrastructure for smooth handling of cargo generated from the hinterland, the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) had provided one more line at the Railway Marshalling Yard.
According to a press release here, first rake on the the new line was flagged off by NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan yesterday.
Ever since the commissioning of the broad gauge line between Mangalore-Hassan, the movement of cargo from the hinterland had tremendously increased. From 5.67 lakh tones of cargo moved by rail during 2004-05, it had grown to 61.85 lakh tones in 2007-08. During the current year 33.39 lakh tones of cargo moved till October 2008 as against 26.35 lakh tones handled during the corresponding period of last year.
To cope up with the increase in railway traffic, NMPT has strengthened the old lines and new lines were added including one line inside the Port at a total cost of around Rs 20 crore.
