Inclement weather dampens Diwali in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 28 (UNI) The inclement weather has threatened to play spoilsport to the festival of lights in Assam with the sun peeping out of the clouds today after two days of incessant rain to brighten up spirits.

Continuous downpour since Sunday, caused by cyclonic storm ''Rashmi'' over Bay of Bengal, had dampened the festive spirit to a great extent.

Shopkeepers complained of dip in sales of crackers and diyas compared to previous years. People refrained from indulging in a shopping spree, fearing that more rains would rob them of the chance of bursting crackers or lighting up their homes with diyas.

However, electronic lighting equipment, especially multi-coloured small lights, were in much demand as people tried to beat the rain by replacing the traditional earthen lamps with the electronic gadgets.

Though the Met office had forecast inclement weather till tomorrow, the rain has ceased at almost all places across the state.

The skies continued to be covered with clouds, with the sun peeking out in the late afternoon bringing relief and joy to the people.

Meanwhile, Governor Shiv Charan Mathur and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi greeted the people on the occasion of Kali Puja and Diwali.

In separate messages, they prayed that the festive season will usher in peace and prosperity and people will live in harmony, shedding all ill feelings.
