Ahmedabad, Oct 25 (UNI) Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) has geared itself to meet any eventuality caused due to improper handling and playing with fireworks during the celebration of the Diwali festival, commencing from tomorrow, in Gujarat.

EMRI 108 Senior Partner Amit Desai said ''We are prepared for expected surge in emergencies in the ensuing Diwali with additional communication and manpower with 400 ambulances in city prepared to manage the possible extra load on our services.'' He said that EMRI doctors have suggested a number of dos and don'ts to prevent loss of eyesight, burning of fire crackers and other mishaps during the ensuing Diwali festival.

They also said that many harmful chemicals used in crackers which included copper, cadmium, lead, magnesium, sodium, zinc and nitrate caused irritation of respirtory tract, anemia and affects the nervous system.

The doctors have suggested to discard used fireworks in a bucket of water and wear cotton clothes. To treat burns, the primary remedy that they have suggested is to splash tapwater and repeat the process till the burning sensation reduces, Mr Desai added.
