Salem: Pre-school vital for poor children

Salem, Oct 24: Pre-school is the most-important time for children to base their skills as the human brain develops between the age of 0-8.


Lakshmi Kanta Raut, economist from Social Security Administration, Washington, the United States while addressing the students of Department of Economics of Periyar University on a research paper, “Inter-generational Long Term Effects of Pre-school – Estimates from a Structural Dynamic Programming Model" prepared by him and Nobel Laureate James J. Heckman.

Mr. Raut said education was important for the children of the poor families to move up in the social ladder. But the lack of social, motivational and cognitive skills, which are important for school and labour market success, affects their social mobility.
