Chandigarh, Oct 22 (UNI) Haryana expects an all time high production of 53.83 lakh tonnes of Kharif foodgrains during this year as against 48.93 lakh tonnes of foodgrains produced during Kharif 2007.
This was revealed in a meeting of the State Level Coordination Committee on Agriculture Production for Rabi 2008 here today presided over by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda who expressed satisfaction over the expected bumper Kharif crops.
It was informed that the production of paddy would be 39.58 lakh tonnes, jowar 50,000 tonnes, maize 53,000 tonnes, bajra 12.49 lakh tonnes, Kharif pulses 73,000 tonnes and guar 4.80 lakh tonnes.
As far as the target set for Rabi 2008-09 were concerned, the state aimed at producing 106.35 lakh tonnes of foodgrains as against production of 104.15 lakh tonnes of foodgrains during Rabi 2007-08.
It was informed that a target had been fixed to produce 103.30 lakh tonnes of wheat, 1.50 lakh tonnes of gram, 1.35 lakh tonnes of barley and 20,000 tonnes of other Rabi pulses.
The target for production of rape seeds and mustard had been set at 10.14 lakh tonnes and for sunflower was 67,000 tonnes.
The Chief Minister expressed serious concern over the damage caused to paddy crop in some areas of the state due to the attack of white backed plant hopper recently.
He directed the Agriculture Department to launch an intensive campaign for educating the farmers for taking remedial measures for controlling pests and diseases in future.
Agriculture Minister H S Chatha said the area under oil seed crops would increase due to timely rains.
The Minister said there was no shortage of certified seeds, fertilisers and pesticides.
