President lauds Army success in counter-insurgency operations
Tezpur, Oct 21 (UNI) President Pratibha Patil today lauded the success the Army has achieved in counter-insurgency operations in the North East along with its responsibility of guarding the frontiers.
''Our security forces have been entrusted with the challenging task of fighting insurgency and they have successfully carried out this responsibility and helped the state governments in this regard,'' Ms Patil said, addressing a Sainik Sanmelan at the 4 Gajraj Corps headquarters here.
Acknowledging the immense hardships the personnel have to face in their duties, she said, ''The government is aware of your hardships and sacrifices and is endeavouring to minimize your problems and provide more facilities.'' The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, also reaffirmed the forces' preparedness to tackle any situation.
''Our forces are among the best and ready to take on any challenge that may arise,'' she said.
''The 4 Corps is the pride of our Army,'' Ms Patil said, referring to the glories the Corps has achieved in World War II, 1962 Chinese aggression, 1971 Indo-Pak war and various other times.
Army chief Gen Deepak Kapoor, welcoming the President to her maiden visit to the Corps, reiterated the Army's commitment in serving and guarding the nation.
''The Army will always undertake all roles assigned to it and fulfill it successfully,'' he said.
Referring to the encouraging economic ties with China, Gen Kapoor said, ''This visit will help in further strengthening our ties.
Gajraj Corps Commander Lt Gen B S Jaswal, offering the vote of thanks, also highlighted the Corps success in counter-insurgency operations.
The President later participated in a 'Barakhana' with the jawans and officers at the venue.
Assam Governor S C Mathur and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also accompanied the President.
