Sigh of relief for part-time, daily-wage staff

Puducherry, Oct 20 (UNI) Part-time and daily-wage employees of the administration, working without salaries for the last three months, will get as an interim measure, payment and work till March 2009.

These employees had been working without any salary for the last three months and were planning demonstrations before the Assembly today.

Puducherry Lt Governor has issued the orders, according to an official release here last night. Some departments of the administration had requested engagement of part-time workers as there was difficulty in coping with everyday workload.

Following this, the Lt Governor issued the order based on the recommendations of the Council of Ministers subject to the outcome of the writ petition pending before the Madras High Court.

The High Court, in its order dated March 28, 2006, had directed the administration not to renew employment of the existing daily workers and not to regularise or absorb any of the daily wage workers without its permission.

However, another order dated April 30, 2008 said the clause could not be regarded as preventing the administration from framing any regulations in respect of engaging the workers as it (framing the regulations) was within the Legislative domain of the Union Territory.
