Madurai: To hold student union polls or not?

Madurai, Oct 20: Whether to have student union elections or not? This was the topic of discussion between principal of colleges and Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University. The hours of discussion though lead to no solution.

Many of them commented that student elections would lead to dirty politics manifesting in muscle and money power. They also stated that caste would play a prominent role in the elections and would lead to social unrest. A principal representing a minority institution strongly rejected the idea of elections and said that communal hatred was being promoted under elections and held that Lyngdoh Committee recommendations would not be implemented.

Othet than this, principals also opposed the idea of interference of university in the payment of salary to lecturers and claimed that it was the right of the respective colleges.
