Tamil Nadu: Madurai revolts to 'woman priest'

Madurai, Oct 17: We do not want woman priests, say residents of Nalluthevanpatti and Usilampatti. Even orders by Madras High Court and Chief Minister himself have failed to bend these villagers.

P Pinniyakkal as a woman priest is not accepted not only by men, but also a majority of the women, are dead against the idea of a woman performing 'pujas" and other rituals at the Durgai Amman temple in Linganayakanpatti. The villagers have blocked the main pathway to the temple by placing thorny bushes.

On Tuesday, government officials escorted Pinniyakkal through an alternative way on the eastern side to enable her perform the rituals in accordance with the orders passed by Justice K Chandru on September 5. They promised to take her again on Friday. In the meantime, the temple was kept closed.
