Rotary club presents Dr K V Thiruvengadam Award

Chennai, Oct 16: Dr K V Thiruvengadam Award for Health Care 2008-09 was awarded to S S Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya by Rotary Club of Madras East. Former Governor of Orissa M M Rajendran presented the awards to the recipients.

The award, instituted by the club in the name of the eminent physician, is given to an individual, who does outstanding service to all sections of society, especially the needy and underprivileged in the delivery of quality and affordable healthcare services. This year, the award was presented to Dr Badrinath by the club along with M.S.R.Dental Surgery.

Dr Badrinath, in his acceptance speech, said that community service was the motto of Sankara Nethralaya and it offered free service to the poor and the underprivileged in rural areas. Last year, out of 43,000 outpatients, 50 per cent were poor people. Out of 32,000 surgeries performed by the hospital last year, 12,000 were done free of cost. On an average, about 30 to 40 poor people underwent operation free of cost, who otherwise could not afford to undergo such treatment, he said.
