Mizoram goes to polls on Nov 29

Aizawl, Oct 14 (UNI) The Election Commission of India has fixed November 29 as the date for elections to the sixth Mizoram Assembly.

Official sources here today said notification will be issued on November 5 while the last date for filing of nomination is fixed on November 12. Scrutiny of nominations will be held on November 13 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is December 15.

The sources said the elections will be completed in one phase on November 29 and results will be announced on December 8.

When contacted over phone, Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer Lalmalsawma said, ''The news we have been receiving on TV is all we know. I have not been officially informed of the announcement of the ECI on the state elections.'' The term of the ruling Mizo National Front, led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, ends in December.

This year's elections to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly will broadly be a triangular fight with the ruling MNF, the largest Opposition Pradesh Congress and the United Democratic Alliance, newly formed by two smaller regional parties Zoram Nationalist Party and Mizoram People's Conference with the backing of farmers' group ZKP.

As of now, no party has officially announced its candidates, except a few aspirants, who have announced their candidature on Independent tickets.
