Commissioning of Baglihar power project politically motivated: BJP

Jammu, Oct 9 (UNI) The ''hurried'' commissioning of Baglihar hydro-power project on river Chenab by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tomorrow is nothing but a politically motivated step of the Congress, the Bhartiya Janata Party today said.

''BJP welcomes the commissioning of Baglihar project but why Congress is so hurried?'' BJP spokesman Hari Om told UNI, terming it a move looking at the ensuing assembly elections in the state while keeping the necessities of local population at stake.

Population in the eastern districts of Doda and Kishtwar is facing great difficulties in commuting up to Jammu for their day to day requirement due to blocking of submerging road.

While water in the Chenab has risen due to the closure of gates at the dam, the only road connecting the eastern areas to Jammu, which is on the threshold of submerging into the river, is being blocked for traffic due to the continuing work on the alternate route.

''Basic necessities of people, like rehabilitation of displaced locals and road communication for other population should not have been ignored like this,'' the spokesman said, asserting that the Congress party wanted to take the undue credit of power project, which was started in the late '90s.
