Mous signed for setting up of 'Education City'
Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) Decks have been cleared for setting up of an 'Education City' in Sarangpur area of the Union Territory with signing of MoUs by concerned parties with the Chandigarh Administration here today.
The MoUs were signed by representatives of NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies), Chitkara Education Trust, Chandigarh, and Indian Express Newspaper (Mumbai) Limited with Home-cum-Education Secretary Ram Niwas in the presence of Punjab Governor and Union Territory Administrator, General (Retd.) S F Rodrigues.
Addressing educationists and academicians on the occasion, General Rodrigues said that the project of Education City had been conceived to create a world class educational infrastructure with focus on empowering children and sharpening their skills to make them professionally competent.
Special emphasis has been laid to provide assistance in the form of scholarships and low-cost quality education to the committed and intelligent students, belonging to disadvantaged sections, who cannot afford to pay normal fees in other institutions, he said .
General Rodrigues said that the Education City would have effective linkages with Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park, Film City, Theme Park and Medicity for infrastructural support.
He said the Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park was on the fast track of development, which will provide jobs to about 37,000 professionals. Similarly, the Theme Park when made functional in a couple of years will give a fillip to tourism, he added.
General Rodrigues said that special provision was being made in the Medicity for upgrading the health status of poor strata of society. He said the home for street children, destitute women, crippled children and mentally challenged kids were being commissioned shortly. He appealed to the corporate sector to contribute their support for running these social welfare projects.
