Election Commission team to assess poll situation in J-K today

Srinagar, Oct 7 : A three-member Election Commission team will today assess the preparedness of the state administration to hold the Assembly polls.

During the two-day visit, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami along with two Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and SY Quereshi will meet senior civil and police officials.

According to sources, the team will meet Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir C. Phunsog and Director General of Police (DGP) A K Suri.

The elections are to be held before January 9, 2009 in the state, which is under Governor's rule presently.

The term of the Assembly, which was dissolved following the breakup of the Congress-PDP coalition in the wake of the Amarnath land transfer row, ends on November 20.
