Curfew affects Media in Kashmir, no newspaper published

Srinagar, Oct 6 (UNI) Media remained most affected in the Kashmir Valley where curfew has been imposed since yesterday, in view of the separatists 'Lal Chowk chalo' call for today.

Due to the curfew, no local english and urdu newspaper was published.

Though officials claimed to have issued sufficient curfew passes to newspaper offices, the management of most local newspapers alleged sufficient passes needed for publishing newspapers were not given out.

There was also no means for distribution of newspapers, as security forces were not honouring the curfew passes, they alleged and said they could not circulate the newspapers published yesterday, because of the restrictions.

The Jammu, regional and National newspapers also could not be delivered for the second day today, following the curfew. The offices of about 40 urdu and english dailies remained closed.

People in the Valley had to remain in touch with the outside world through internet, which was also not functioning properly. The BSNL internet service remained off.

A number of local english newspapers were, however, availale on Internet, including Greater Kashmir.

The local news channels also stopped telecasting the news and current affairs programme, following directions by the government.

The government also stopped the transmission of local news channel '' Sen channel'' since October 4.

The E-TV- urdu also went off the air in many areas for unknown reasons. However, PTV was back on air in the Valley.

The local news channels had telecast live the Muzaffarabad, Pampore, TRC and Eidgah marchs, in which lakhs of people from all parts of the valley participated.
