Agartala, Oct 5: The West Tripura Chief Judicial Magistrate has issued bail against Rs 5,000 bond to a senior surgeon of the state, who was accused of negligence in professional duty about two years ago.

Dr Pratap Sannyal, a government doctor, was accused of inserting a corrugated drain pipe into the patient's abdomen while surgery owing to his negligence.

Police said photo journalist Bapi Roychoudhury had filed an FIR against Dr Sannyal who had conducted a gall bladder operation on Mr Roychoudhury's wife Shrabani Deb in January 2006.

Mrs Deb started experiencing some complications a few days after the operation and accordingly it was brought to the notice of Dr Sannyal, but he refused to make any further clinical investigation of the patient, Mr Roychoudhury alleged.

However, a foreign body was found during investigation last year in the patient's right lower abdominal wall, part of which extended intra-abdominally. Nevertheless, Dr Sannyal allegedly refused to accept the findings of the report and misbehaved with the patient and his family.

Finally, an eight-inch corrugated drain pipe was removed by doctors at a private nursing home at Salt Lake in Kolkata on October 30 last year. Doctors at this nursing home, reportedly admitted that it had been inserted after operation but had not been duly removed, which caused physiological harm to the patient's body.

However, police failed to submit chargesheet against the accused doctor even after a year and Dr Sannyal surrendered before the court on September 28 without maintaining legal formalities and subsequently he was summoned by the court and put behind the bars for three hours and finally issued bail.
