PM asks Patil to give appraisal note on Orissa, Kar violence

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Expressing serious concern over the violence against minorities in Orissa and Karnataka, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today directed Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to prepare an appraisal note on the situation in the two States at the earliest.

''The Home Minister has been directed to submit the appraisal note in the next Cabinet meeting,'' Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that took stock of the situation in the two States.

He said the Government expressed serious concern over the violence in Orissa, especially Kandhamal, and Karnataka.

Asked whether the Cabinet discussed imposing President's Rule in Orissa, Mr Dasmunsi said the Centre cannot do anything in the name of Constitution without taking all things into account.

''But the Centre can take any step for ensuring the safety of the people,'' he added.

He said the Orissa Government had to do more than what it had done so far to bring the situation under control.
