Calcutta University to revive gold medal awards for PG toppers

Kolkata, Oct 1 (UNI) The Calcutta University will reintroduce awarding gold medals to toppers in the post graduate level examinations, a system done away with since 1984 for paucity of funds.

The syndicate of the university in a meeting yesterday decided to reintroduce the awards in all diciplines from this academic year.

Besides, those who have topped in the examinations between 1984 and 2008 will get gold medals.

The university also gave its approval to Ramkrishna Mission Shikshan Mandir, Belur, a B.Ed, College and Ramkrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, to function as autonomous institutes from 2008-09 academic year.

The institutes will be able to frame their own syllabus, conduct examinations, evaluate answer scripts and even publish results.

The institutes will also receive a grant of Rs 60 lakh for single faculty and Rs 1.2 crore for multi-faculty departments.

The new gradation was given after the UGC granted the two institutes autonomy.

St Xaviers was the first such institute to have autonomy.
