SC issues notices to Govt, ECI regarding former BSP MP
New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Union Government and Election Commission of India on a petition by former Meerut MP Mohammad Shahid Akhlaq, challenging his disqualification as member of Lok Sabha.
Akhlaq had defected from BSP to Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh Yadav and was subsequently disqualified as MP along with two others, Ramakant Yadav and Bhalchandra Yadav under the anti-defection law.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal issued notices after hearing Senior Counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for the petitioner who contended that the CD which contained the sting operations, had led to the disqualification of the petitioner and he was not given raw unedited CD to defend himself.
The apex court also issued notices on the application for interim stay against the disqualification order.
