SC asks Govt to take final decision on surrogate baby
New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed the Union Government to take a final decision on the fate of surrogate baby Manjhi within four weeks from the date of representation to be made by the baby's Japanese surrogate grandmother.
The baby was born on July 25 in Ahmedabad and was shifted to Jaipur in view of the bomb explosions in Ahmedabad.
A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat had issued the directions as the surrogate grandmother of the infant had applied for the custody of the child.
Meanwhile, an NGO had raised certain issues like the nationality of the baby girl. It asked whether she would require passport and visa to be taken to Japan and which country's citizenship she would be entitled to--India or Japan.
