Jaya condemns Lankan Navy for killing Indian fisherman
Chennai, Sep 28 (UNI) AIADMK supremo and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly J Jayalalithaa today condemned the killing of an Indian fisherman by the Lankan Navy near Katchatheevu.
In a statement here she expressed grief over the incident and offered condolences to the family of fisherman Murugan.
She also announced a solatium of Rs 50,000 to his family.
Alleging that the Central and the State Governments had failed to curb frequent killings of Indian fisherman, Ms Jayalalithaa said, adding that only to prevent such incidents and loss of lives she had moved the Supreme Court to get back Katchatheevu, which was ceded to Sri Lanka through an agreement in 1974.
She also urged the Centre and the State Governments to take firm steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
