Women can serve alchohol: Karnataka HC
Bangalore, Sep 24: In a landmark judgement Karnataka High Court on Wednesday, Sep 24 articulated that women can serve liquors in Bar, putting an end to the debate of women working at such places. This ruling quashes the existing 'Karnataka Excise Act 1965', which prohibits women from working at such places including pubs, dance bars and live bands, where liquor is served.
Going by the Karnataka Excise Act 1965 the employment of women at such places was 'illegal'. The High Court while declaring its verdict also referred to a similar judgment by the Supreme Court in 2007, which permitted women to be employed as bar tenders provided their security was ensured. Since then, the live band association has been trying to change the Karnataka Excise Act in an effort to legalise dance bars.
