SC declines to entertain PIL on Indo-US nuke deal
New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) The Supreme Court has said courts cannot interfere in the policy matters as it is the job of Parliament or the government to frame a policy.
The position was clarified by a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan while dismissing a petition seeking directions to the government to take Parliament into confidence before going ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Other judges on the bench were Justice P Sathasivam and Justice J M Panchal.
The apex court had on September 19 dismissed the petition filed by Manohar Lal Sharma, an advocate who had contended that it should be a deal between the two sovereign countries and the Hyde Act must be discussed in Parliament.
The Left parties had withdrawn support from the UPA government at the Centre on the nuke deal and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had to take the Vote of Confidence in the Lok Sabha before proceeding further on the pact.
