Over 2,400 people rescued from flood-hit areas in Gujarat

Surendranagar (Gujarat), Sept 21 : The Army has rescued over 2,400 people as flood situation remained grim in Surendranagar District of Gujarat on Saturday.

While no casualty has been reported so far, floodwaters have submerged over 20 villages for the last three days.

The Army is providing food packets to marooned people and has set up health camps in the vicinity.

"The two places which have been affected in major way in Surendrangar District are Lakhtar and Limbi. In both the flood affected places, the Army did a good job and saved a lot of people. The Army supplied food to flood affected people and also provided them medical aid," said Brigadier Arun Kumar Khanna.

Though it is not raining heavily, but the floodwater has made life difficult for the residents. With Surendranagar-Ahmedabad highway still remains closed, nearly 35 state highways and 208 other roads have been closed to traffic in the last three days due to floods.

Earlier on Friday, State Chief Minister Narendra Modi did an aerial survey of the flood-affected villages in Ahmedabad and Surendranagar Districts. Over 10,000 food packets and drinking water pouches were air-dropped in 30 worst-affected villages of Dhandhuka taluka.

Modi later held a meeting with his ministers and senior bureaucrats for carrying out emergency relief and rehabilitation works like distribution of cash doles and initiating measures to prevent spread of diseases post-floods.
