Jammu to observe two-day bandh: Samiti

Jammu, Sep 20 (UNI) The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) today called for two-day Jammu bandh in protest against the State Administration for not permitting them to hold a function in memory of those killed during the agitation.

Samiti convenor Leela Karan Sharma, while addressing hundreds of supporters and activists of the saffron brigade outside the Abhinav Theatre, announced the call for two-day Jammu bandh on September 21 and 22.

''We had a permission to organise the function in remembrance of those sacrificed their lives during two-month long agitation but administration did not allowed us to enter the venue,'' Mr Sharma said and added,'' it hints that government is not in favour of smooth sailing of state affairs.'' We were assured full cooperation after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between us and the government on August 31 but still some of our demands were lying on the table including quashing of the Public Safety Act (PSA) on saint Dinesh Bharti, the Samiti leader asserted.

He, however, said there would be a complete two-day shut down in the city and no transport would ply on the roads.

The SAYSS, a conglomeration of various political, social and religious organisations, wanted to organise a function to pay tributes to those eleven people, who died in the two-month long agitation and to compensate their families with an amount of Rs four lakh each.

Besides, it also wanted to honour hundreds of saints and religious gurus for their support to the mass movement.
