Coast Guard organises massive coastal clean up drive at Porbandar
Ahmedabad, Sep 20 (UNI) Observing the 'International Coastal clean up day' today, the Indian Coast Guard has organised a coastal clean up at Chowpati beach in Porbandar, to foster general awareness on the need to keep beaches and surrounding areas clean.
According to defence sources, around 500 volunteers from NGOs, schools, colleges and various government organizations have participated in this drive.
In order to bring awareness on the marine litter and their detrimental effect on marine environment, the International Coastal Clean Up day is observed every year by millions of people all around the world.
The drive was conducted under the aegis of Regional United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and Indian Coast Guard, being the nodal agency responsible for safety and security of marine environment. They organize International Coastal Cleanup Day every year on third Saturday of September in collaboration with NGOs, schools, colleges and citizens of the country, sources said.
Porbandar District Collector N D Parmar and DIG Coast Guard, Porbandar PKS Chandran were present during the clean up drive.
