Northern Kerala districts topped crime against women: Panel

Kozhikode, Sep 19 (UNI) Northern districts of Kerala topped in crime against women, but few such cases were reported from there, Kerala State Commission for Women chairperson Justice D Sreedevi today said.

Inaugurating a workshop 'Jagrata' here, she said as per reports received by the Commission, Thiruvanathapuram and Kollam topped domestic harassment cases, while very few cases were reported from Kannur and Kozhikode districts in the north.

Pointing out that many victims of such harrassments directly approached the Commission for redressal of their grievanances, she said they should go to ward-based Jagrata samithis and later to police for the purpose.

However, she regretted that at times the victims were not given proper attention at police stations.

The Commission would intervene only if justice was denied to the victims by the authorities concerned in an attempt to protect the culprits.

Mayor M Bhaskaran presided over the function while Commission member T Devi delivered the key-note address.

City Police Commissioner Anoop Kuruvila John and Deputy Mayor P T Abdul Latheef were among those present.
